When I signed up for my very first 200hr Yoga Teacher Training, I had no idea what I was getting myself into.
Do you ever have those times when you do something because you think it’s going to be fun and a good experience, but it ends up changing your life in such a magical and transformative way? Well that was me!
So here are 7 reasons why you should join a YTT:
1. Learning the wisdom and knowledge found in traditional Yoga is TRANSFORMATIVE!
Yoga is a tradition and philosophy that has been practiced for literally thousands of years! The ancient Yogis discovered the ripeness of life and paved the way towards higher consciousness and enlightenment.
Of course, with time, the original translation and interpretation of Yoga has shifted, so it’s important to find a training course which dedicates itself to teaching the most authentic practices of Yoga in tradition.
2. Find the bridge between spirituality, psychology and physiology to gain an all-encompassing holistic understanding of yourself and others.
You’d probably know by now that Yoga is more than just a good stretch, a few fancy breathing techniques and a time to fall asleep in Savasana. Yoga is a holistic living philosophy which encompasses all aspects of life, health and wellbeing.
This is an incredible perspective to understand. It allows you to tend to and get to know yourself in all facets of your You-ness, and see the bigger picture in others too.
You may or may not realise it, but just with that awareness alone, you are more compassionate, empathetic, connected and loving.
3. Join a community of like-minded souls who could become lifelong friends.
A Yoga Teacher Training consists of a small, intimate group of curious people, and as we know, Yoga is a very humanistic practice. There are times when you must become vulnerable in the container, surrounded by your peers, to fully understand and integrate the teachings of Yoga.
Through intimacy, openness, vulnerability, support and connection, you’ll make relationships that will last you through your lifetime.
Although we may be hundreds of kilometers apart, I still have strong bonds with my peers, and no matter how long it’s been since we last met, when we do meet, it’s like no time has passed at all. Our bond is strong and built from intimacy, love and connection.
4. You start feeling your body more, and differently.
Your body awareness increases drastically! Once you learn how to move yours and others’ bodies in alignment with natural biomechanics, you become so much more aware of how your body responds in certain situations, emotional and mental states, and find how much your body is truly capable of (which is more than you think!).
You create this beautiful somatic connection to yourself, and this expands into those whom you’re teaching.
5. You always feel inspired and curious to learn more, constantly filling your cup.
You quickly understand that 200 hours of training is only a means of starting your journey. After you complete your training, it’s easy to feel hungry for more. You continue to pursue the knowledge and wisdom of Yoga through books, documentaries, mentors, teachers and continued education training programs.
Remember, Yoga is a tradition that’s been around for thousands of years, which means there are so many resources out there from so many Yogis who are prepared to share different perspectives and experiences of Yoga. You find things that resonate with you, and you find things that don’t. And that’s more than okay, because it’s your individuality and unique experience that makes you the incredible Yoga teacher and true Yogi.
6. It’s extremely fulfilling when you realise how much you’re really positively impacting people’s lives.
There’s a quote that I came across many years ago that’s stuck with me:
“A life lived for others is a life worth living.”
As a teacher, you provide a service for others, a guidance to return them to their bodies, their hearts and into the essence of themselves. Something as simple as a reminder to feel the breath, or to close the eyes while in a posture, is enough to guide people back into their bodies.
Over time, you’ll have the ability to guide people through healing their trauma, to recover from a physical ailment, or to show them how to shift their mindset into a more mindful, positive one.
I’ll share a personal experience.
I’ve worked with women experiencing issues with fertility, struggling to conceive. After a few weeks of dedication to a Yoga practice, these women entered their new journey towards motherhood. What an incredible thing! Many celebrations to these women who consistently showed up for themselves, connected back into their bodies, their energy, their souls, and overcame the challenges of conception they were facing.
Without including my ego in this, I’m aware of the part I played. I’m not a Yoga Teacher because it provides me with validation. I’m a Yoga Teacher because Yoga transformed my life and showed me how to overcome my own challenges, and that’s a process I wanted to share with as many as I can, so that others may live to their fullest potential of life.
That’s my dharma, my purpose. And many teachers find a similar dharma.
7. Learn ancient practices that have been utilized in modern day for self-regulation to improve mental wellbeing.
Pop psychology has become a prominent topic to hit conversations in person, on social media, and has inspired so many coaches and wellness facilitators to provide services to improve holistic wellbeing.
Learning the tradition of Yoga encompasses many ancient practices that have been used for millennia which really have a powerful impact on nervous system regulation. Self-regulation is a crucial practice to learn to ensure your quality of life is at its optimal. Yogic Pranayama, Asana, meditation and Mantra are extremely useful resources to have in your toolkit.
There you have it folks! If I haven’t yet convinced you why Yoga is one of the most beneficial practices you can incorporate into your life, I apologise… I’m not a writer, I’m a Yogi (haha!).
Throughout my life, I’ve worked in many industries, doing a diversity of roles. But nothing that I have ever done has been as soul nourishing, fulfilling, and inspiring as what I do when I walk into a class of curious, passionate people who are eager to fill their cups with Yoga.
It hasn’t been an easy journey. From the material and surface perspective, opening a Yoga studio and pursuing my passion after the age of the pandemic, it’s been a really tough venture. From a more deeply personal insight, becoming a Yoga teacher and devoting myself to Yoga every day, in every action and thought I take, has confronted me with difficult reflections in healing my own trauma.
I read a quote earlier this week that sums up the journey so truthfully:
“Yoga is the journey from fear to faith.”
Let that sit with you.
And if you hear the calling, answer it.
