Discover the Benefits of Aerial Yoga at Flow State

Have you peeked behind the curtain into a beautiful new aerial studio and been intrigued but thought, "This isn’t for me?" or “I can’t do that!” Well, it is and you can!

Aerial Yoga is a unique practice that combines the traditional elements of yoga with the fun, freeing sensation of being suspended in a silk hammock. It's a practice designed for everyone—whether you’re a seasoned yogi or someone entirely new to yoga, there’s a place for you in the silks. Aerial Yoga is an excellent way to enhance your existing practice or explore a new form of movement.

1.Decompression and Spinal Health

This is personally my favourite reason for practicing aerial yoga, as someone who has dealt with spinal issues and spinal pain, the decompression that aerial offers has had powerful benefits for me. The gentle traction created when you hang upside down decompresses the spine, relieving pressure on the vertebrae and promoting better spinal alignment. Decompressing the spine can also help improve your posture, making you feel taller and more open, and can help reduce pain associated with spinal conditions

2. Increased Strength and Flexibility

Aerial Yoga engages muscles you might not typically use in a floor-based practice, think of our traditional Warrior 2 with an element of balance! Balancing and manoeuvring in the hammock requires you to activate your core, upper body, and stabilizing muscles. It also helps you to safely explore deeper stretches, as the silk offers support and allows you to move with ease.

3. Reduced Stress and Anxiety

Floating in the silk hammock provides a feeling of weightlessness that can be incredibly soothing. Many students find the sensation of being cocooned in the hammock during savasana (final resting pose) to be deeply relaxing. The combination of gentle swaying, calming breathwork, and the sensation of being supported creates a calming effect on the nervous system, making Aerial Yoga, in particular our aerial restorative sessions offer a wonderful practice for reducing stress and anxiety.

5. A Fun, Playful Approach to Yoga

Aeria Yoga is a playful and fun practice!! The experience of being lifted off the ground can make you feel like a kid again, bringing a smile to your face and a lightness to your spirit. It’s a chance to explore your practice from a fresh perspective and have fun with movement.

6. Building Confidence and Trust

Trying something new, especially something that involves being suspended in the air, can feel intimidating at first. However, as you begin to trust the support of the hammock and your own abilities, you’ll notice your confidence grow. Aerial Yoga challenges you to step outside your comfort zone, offering a powerful reminder of your strength and resilience both on and off the mat.
